DemocracyWatch - The Global Campaign

DemocracyWatch is a central campaign of our Center of Operation for Rights and Environment (CORE).

It focuses on monitoring the rule of law, functioning and performance or the lack thereof of the executive, legislative and judicial powers in democratic states around the world.

The main objective is to document and expose institutional abuse of power, discrimination and human rights violations.

PHILOSOPHY

The background for DemocracyWatch is formed by the issues inherent to pillars one and three of the "seven pillars" framework for sustainable development and human rights, utilized by Rainbow Warriors International, which enables transparent assimilation of sustainable development and human rights concepts into existing national (development) programs and policies, by identifying seven areas around which the essential elements of sustainable development can be constructed:
  1. democratic sustainability- the adherence to the principles of the trias politica, and where the principles of self-reliance, flexibility and continuity apply to the dynamics of a democratic society;
  2. political sustainability- the pursuit and practice of good governance or good government;
  3. institutional sustainability- the norms, relationships and infrastructure (decision making systems) established to consolidate and execute policies established by government;
  4. social sustainability- the framework for continued long term social progress;
  5. cultural sustainability- the ongoing preservation of national and cultural identity and underlying dynamics within the context of socio-economic growth;
  6. economic sustainability- allocating environmental resources in such a way that the impact on the environment is minimized;
  7. environmental sustainability- preservation and proper management of the environment.
FOCUS ISSUES

DemocracyWatch focuses on the following issues:
  • Free and fair elections and voting rights
  • Freedom of speech, civil rights and privacy
  • Freedom of the press
  • Immigrant and refugee rights
  • Indigenous and non-represented peoples' rights
  • International human rights implementation and monitoring
  • Police practices, prisons, torture and abuse
  • Rights of the poor, women and children
A related campaign, CorruptionWatch, deals with issues related to pillar two of the seven pillars framework of sustainable development as utilized by Rainbow Warriors International
