BACKGROUND |
|
On June 20, 1995 was founded Rainbow Warriors International (RWI), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sustainable
development and human rights worldwide, and of Small Island Developing States, indigenous and non-represented peoples in particular, with headquarters in the Caribbean island of Aruba.
Our name is based on the Warriors of the Rainbow legend, a Native American legend which talks of the Warriors of the Rainbow from all corners of the world uniting to help save Mother Earth
and its creatures from the greed and destructive ways of our western world. |
PHILOSOPHY |

Rainbow Warriors International utilizes a "seven pillars" framework for sustainable development and human rights which enables transparent assimilation
of sustainable development and human rights concepts into existing national (development) programs and policies, by identifying seven areas around which the
essential elements of sustainable development can be constructed:
- democratic sustainability- the adherence to the principles of the trias politica, and where the principles of self-reliance, flexibility and
continuity apply to the dynamics of a democratic society;
- political sustainability- the pursuit and practice of good governance or good government;
- institutional sustainability- the norms, relationships and infrastructure (decision making systems) established to consolidate and execute policies
established by government;
- social sustainability- the framework for continued long term social progress;
- cultural sustainability- the ongoing preservation of national and cultural identity and underlying dynamics within the context of socio-economic growth;
- economic sustainability- allocating environmental resources in such a way that the impact on the environment is minimized;
- environmental sustainability- preservation and proper management of the environment.
The difference between pillars six and seven is the emphasis on the human dimension in pillar six and the bio-diversity dimension in pillar seven.
The concepts of self-reliance, flexibility and continuity are "organic" concepts also found in natural ecosystems, and take into account the fact that the global
human society like the global natural ecosystem is a complex of self-regulating, adaptive and continuous dynamic systems.
